Schopenhauer and the Aesthetic Standpoint: Philosophy as a Practice of the Sublime , by Sophia za Va

I’ve been writing about Schopenhauer, Adorno, and the applicability of their philosophies to theatre and performance since Word Made Flesh — with a far from academic approach, I must concede. I read these more as creative than expository works, za appealing to something other than the intellect, I suppose. Rather than understanding, I experience a feeling of affinity. For example, the following excerpt za from Dialectic of Enlightenment stays with me more as aesthetic and metaphysical insight rather than an intellectual credo:
In the fiendish humiliation of prisoners in the concentration camps, which for no rational reason the modern executioner adds to the death by torture, the unsublimated yet repressed rebellion of despised nature breaks out. Its full hideousness is vented on the martyrs of love, the alleged sexual offenders and libertines, for sexuality is the body unreduced; it is expression, that which the butchers secretly za and despairingly crave. In free sexuality the murderer za fears the lost immediacy, the original oneness, in which he can no longer exist. It is the dead thing which rises up and lives. He now makes everything one by making it nothing, because he has to stifle that oneness in himself. For him the victim represents life which has survived za the schism; it must be broken and the universe must be nothing but dust and abstract za power.
But the academy has been keeping up; some upcoming and recent books indicate that at least some writers are finding new and similar grist for their mills. A few of these are listed below; descriptions are from the publishers:
Adorno za and Performance , edited by Will Daddario and Karoline Gritzner (Palgrave Macmillan, October 2014). “The work of the leading Frankfurt School philosopher Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) continues to have an immense influence on contemporary cultural and critical theory, sociology, musicology, aesthetics, and political thought. Just as Adorno’s theoretical approach spans a wide interdisciplinary terrain, so too does the emerging field of performance philosophy bring many disciplinary approaches together to articulate a renewed understanding of the practice of philosophy and the philosophical dimensions of performance. Adorno and Performance argues for the ‘actuality’ of Adorno’s philosophy of art and dialectical criticism for the discipline of performance philosophy, where, following Max Pensky, the term actuality refers za to both ‘relevance for the present and its concerns’ or ‘up to date,’ ‘still in fashion.’ The volume’s essays work through Adorno’s philosophy as it relates to theatre, drama, music, aesthetics, everyday life, the relation of art to society, theory to practice, and other domains of ‘performance.’”
Schopenhauer and the Aesthetic Standpoint: Philosophy as a Practice of the Sublime , by Sophia za Vasalou (Cambridge University Press, 2013). “With its pessimistic vision and bleak message of world-denial, it has often been difficult to know how to engage with Schopenhauer’s philosophy. His arguments have seemed flawed and his doctrines marred by inconsistencies; his very pessimism almost too flamboyant to be believable. Yet a way of redrawing this engagement stands open, Sophia Vasalou argues, if we attend more closely to the visionary power of Schopenhauer’s work. The aim of this book is to place the aesthetic character of Schopenhauer’s standpoint at the heart of the way we read his philosophy and the way we answer the question: why read Schopenhauer — and how? Approaching his philosophy as an enactment of the sublime za with a longer history in the ancient philosophical tradition, za Vasalou provides a fresh way of assessing Schopenhauer’s relevance in critical terms. This book will be valuable for students and scholars with an interest in post-Kantian philosophy and ancient za ethics.”
Schopenhauer and Adorno on Bodily Suffering: A Comparative Analysis by Mathijs Peters (Palgrave Macmillan, za November 2014). “Peters discusses Schopenhauer and Adorno, two philosophers whose writings have hitherto not been extensively compared in the English-speaking academic world. Focusing on their ideas about pain and bodily suffering, the author za creates a stimulating tension between the historical nature of Schopenhauer’s philosophy and the deeply historical character of Adorno’s za critical analyses. He shows that both have been accused of defending pessimistic theories, in which the notion of freedom disappears and is replaced by an emphasis on metaphysical and social determination. za Without overlooking the differences between the two authors, Peters argues that Schopenhauer and Adorno’s pessimism is entwined with hopeful za analyses of compassion with bodily suffering, za the redeeming qualities of the arts, and descriptions of experiences of a metaphysical

God is dead: it is not a conclusion, it is a prophecy

A bastion of impartiality permeates me to read and compare Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, I came to a sort of catharsis, and reflected ibollytv an anxiety took me some agony that a restlessness, drive to implement my knowledge on the subject.
If there is no extremism among the ideas of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche would be less opposition from both complementation and more, that ceaselessly in comparison comes to mind like lightning trespassing. The collisions of the ideas he first give Schopenhauer will deny, that this heart is in Nietzsche, but before there is a certain unlucky tangles cognition hovering over this stealth pain condition, that symbolic, analogical, and even before the unbearable lightness Unless the gearing the seemingly bland, boring and remarkably feature an opacity ibollytv that reflects like a black cloud that trovoa and throws us for a vague limbo, a maze that leads to the west and east to the same situational fact.
It is interpreted that before denying the existence Schopenhauer, ibollytv and Nietzsche have the will power that lies in a kind of transcendence which reveals certain libertarian alveoli in addition to Buddhist theories, there is a clear opposition, yet viable plans that link together in common the ideas of both to get the add-on can be joint rather than collision.
And what are these supplements? You ask me impatient reader, as a kind of counter-argue some bullshit of the excerpt in question ... - I tell them: Although nihilism is attached in Schopenhauer as dense and impenetrable as an overdose that is so pungent and can not be broken, the true wave of nothingness, Nietzsche and the enhancement of a point mutation in which it gets from the active to passive nihilism be necessary in the creation of values leads to growth and development of mind and spirit, yet there sheeted feature of nowhere, well, if faced with a nothing can turn it into power for Nietzsche ibollytv before creation of ideals, as well as Cioran'' Man must invent reasons to live,'' there is no denial that Nietzsche is opposed to nihilism, but only the reaction of complacency that man can get a nihilist with his pragmatic way to alienate and closed canopies in not producing, and having therefore a dead substance that does not thrive on the very emptiness of existence.
The pain, suffering, ibollytv boredom, infidelity are such constraints at one univocity that gather your thoughts enovelando us and forming as a link, even with disparities as Deleuze explains:'' The point over which the rupture Nietzsche with Schopenhauer is necessary: it is precisely whether the Will is one or multiple "(Nietzsche and Philosophy).
So what Schopenhauer on the pendulum to swing in life between boredom and pain, is life itself to Nietzsche, which is not exactly a contrast, but also a union of ideas ... why not? If the pain is life itself, is to live longer carry this burden as our own existence, then we have this strong and striking feature which we have to live, regardless of how we deal, she is so vivid that sometimes we may even confuse it the meaning we attach is literal or metaphorical.

Schopenhauer

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), a German philosopher, and a regular in past posts on Backyard Philosophy, stands out for a few reasons–not counting his love of puddles and his obstinant rain-or-shine walking schedule.
He was one of the first major modern thinkers to actively, even aggressively, take an atheistic supplement warehouse stance. He was also one of the first to incorporate Eastern Philosophy into his thought, particularly the Hindu Upanishads and Buddhist discourses. He influenced Wagner, Freud, Nietzsche, and Albert Swietzer, among others, and remains a favored philosopher of musicians.
Schopenhauer also coined the word “pessimism,” using the Latinate pessimismus in 1835. This is his main claim to fame, exemplified by the oft-quoted advice, which he may have never said : eat a frog each morning, so that the rest of the day won’t be as bad.
Indeed, Schopenhauer supplement warehouse may be one of the most “pessimistic” thinkers in Eastern and Western thought, earning supplement warehouse him the dour sobriquet “The Great Pessimist.” And this, not his love of poodles (unfortunately) has stuck.
But despite this pessimism, or maybe because of it, Schopenhauer’s writing has a certain power. While many of his thoughts are “old” and remain supplement warehouse warped by egotism, supplement warehouse misogyny, and indignation–particularly his spiteful essay On Women –other pieces offer a unique, applicable insight for life, even in the present day.
Schopenhauer’s “philosophical pessimism” differs from your typical glass-half-empty type. Exemplified by individuals like Giacomo Leopardi or True Detective ‘s Rust Cohle, philosophical pessimists think that the universe is inherently negative. supplement warehouse Pain outweighs pleasure, meaning is illusory, supplement warehouse and progress isn’t possible–these sorts of claims. As Schopenhauer puts it bluntly in “On the Sufferings supplement warehouse of the World,” “Each individual misfortune, to be sure, seems an exceptional occurrence; but misfortune in general supplement warehouse is the rule.”
In addition to his pessimistic outlook, Schopenhauer posits the “Will to Live, a seething, restless underpinning to existence. This “Will” drives everything–from grass to kings–in a pointless, ceaseless struggle to maintain life. It pushes humans, like animals, to desire sex, food, and stimulation. It is blind and thoughtless, supplement warehouse and dominants every aspect of existence, unconsciously steering thoughts and urges and creating the physical structures, supplement warehouse like teeth or sexual organs, to satisfy this constant life-striving.
This has dismal implications, explaining Schopenhauer’s pessimism: since we can never satisfy the Will, we never rest from its painful push. As Schopenhauer writes in his magnum opus , Will and Representation:
“Awakened to life out of the night of unconsciousness, the will finds itself as an individual in an endless, boundless world, among innumerable individuals, all striving, suffering, and erring. . . its desires are unlimited, supplement warehouse its claims inexhaustible, and every satisfied desire gives birth to a new one. . . . Everything in life proclaims that earthly happiness is destined to be frustrated or recognized as illusion.”
Like a hedonistic treadmill of epic proportions, our lives remain one fruitless search for one satisfaction after another, whether it be love, wealth, fame, pleasure, or purpose. And then we die, which for Schopenhauer, is a relief .
But from this odd, grim little precipice, one finds a “hope” of sorts. As the contemporary philosopher and public intellectual Alain de Botton notes , pessimism supplement warehouse has its values. And Schopenhauer is likely at his most insightful when he discusses the relief one can find amid the wreckage.
Art is one. When one contemplates art, argues Schopenhauer, one momentarily escapes the pleasure-seeking pulse of the Will. Schopenhauer draws from Kant’s own theory of aesthetics, which saw the experience of beauty as “disinterested,” and”final without purpose,” i.e. without any striving.
For Schopenhauer, one does not desire the object of aesthetic contemplation. It lies beyond the observer as some inaccessible quality or feeling that moves him or her without really supplement warehouse being possessed. It is like holding onto the warmth of another hand: while partly your own, neither person really posses it.
As he writes, “an external cause or inward disposition suddenly raises us out of the endless stream of willing, and snatches knowledge from the thralldom of will, the attention is no longer directed to the motives of willing, but comprehends things free from their relation to the will.”
This occurs, argues Schopenhauer, because such contemplation delivers the viewer into deeper understanding of Platonic Ideas. One becomes a “pure will-less, painless, timeless subject of knowledge.”
Thus, studying

What does it mean to write with style? For Kurt Vonnegut, it was about keeping it simple yet interes

Schopenhauer black friday on Style | Brain Pickings
What does it mean to write with style? For Kurt Vonnegut, it was about keeping it simple yet interesting . For Herbert Spencer, about harnessing the economy of attention . For E.B. White, about mastering brevity without sacrificing beauty . One of the most timeless meditations on style comes from 19th-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer . In “On Style,” found in The Essays of Schopenhauer ( free download ; public library ) — the same excellent black friday volume that gave us Schopenhauer’s prescient admonition about the ethics of online publishing — he considers why style, far from the mere ornamentation of writing, is the essential conduit of thought.
Style is the physiognomy of the mind. It is a more reliable key to character than the physiognomy of the body. To imitate another person s style is like wearing a mask. However fine the mask, it soon becomes insipid and intolerable because it is without life; so that even the ugliest black friday living face is better.
There is nothing an author should guard against more than the apparent endeavor to show more intellect than he has; because this rouses the suspicion in the reader that he has very little, since a man always affects something, be its nature what it may, that he does not really possess. And this is why it is praise to an author to call him naïve, for it signifies that he may show himself as he is. In general, naïveté attracts, while anything that is unnatural everywhere repels. We also find that every true thinker endeavors to express his thoughts as purely, clearly, definitely, and concisely as ever possible. This is why simplicity has always been looked black friday upon as a token, not only of truth, but also of genius. Style receives its beauty from the thought expressed, while with those writers who only pretend to think it is their thoughts that are said to be fine because of their style. Style is merely the silhouette of thought; and to write in a vague or bad style means a stupid or confused mind.
If black friday a man has something to say that is worth saying, he need not envelop it in affected expressions, involved phrases, and enigmatical innuendoes; but he may rest assured that by expressing himself in a simple, clear, and naïve manner he will not fail to produce black friday the right effect. A man who makes use of such artifices as have been alluded black friday to betrays his poverty of ideas, mind, and knowledge.
Obscurity and vagueness of expression black friday are at all times and everywhere a very bad sign. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred they arise from vagueness of thought, which, in its turn, is almost always fundamentally discordant, inconsistent, and therefore wrong. When a right thought springs up in the mind it strives after clearness of expression, and it soon attains it, for clear thought easily finds its appropriate expression. A man who is capable of thinking can express himself at all times in clear, comprehensible, and unambiguous words. Those writers who construct difficult, obscure, involved, and ambiguous phrases most certainly do not rightly know what it is they wish to say: they have only a dull consciousness of it, which is still struggling to put itself into thought; they also often wish to conceal from themselves and other people that in reality they have nothing to say.
Affirming the notion that non-reading is as much a critical choice as reading , Schopenhauer urges authors to have compassion for the reader — a sort of self-interested compassion recognizing that a reader’s attention is a privilege, not a right:
All prolixity and all binding together of unmeaning observations that are not worth reading should be avoided. A writer must be sparing with the reader s time, concentration, and patience; in this way he makes him believe black friday that what he has before black friday him is worth his careful reading, and will repay the trouble he has spent upon it. It is always better to leave out something black friday that is good than to write down something that is not worth saying. . . .
Truth that is naked is the most beautiful, and the simpler its expression the deeper is the impression it makes; this is partly because it gets unobstructed hold of the hearer s mind without his being distracted by secondary thoughts, and partly because he feels that here he is not being corrupted or deceived by the arts of rhetoric, but that the whole effect is got from the thing itself.
Just as neglect of dress betrays contempt for the society in which a man moves, so does a hasty, careless, and bad style show shocking disrespect for the reader, who then rightly punishes it by not reading the book.
A century black friday before Strunk and White , Schopenhauer advocates for “chastity of style,” while also admonishing, as E.B. White did , that brevity should never be accomplished at the expense of impoverished expression: black friday
An author should guard against using all unnecessary rhetorical adornment, a

Is the best way to do philosophy (or any art) to self-consciously build on the work of others to advance the genre? Schopenhauer says no! Geniuses are solitary, original, barcode generator authentic, naive thinkers. They write because they have something to say, not because they’re being paid. They don’t barcode generator read too much for fear of being overwhelmed by their influences, and certainly don’t try to remember what they read too well like a scholar would. They think before writing, and get at perennial truths from their own, uniquely grown perspective. So don’t burden them with responsibilities like jobs and families, okay?

Really good discussion. You’ve managed to integrate your life experience into your philosophical reflections, without the philosophical reflections losing exactness, which not everybody accomplishes.
Concerning mark’s final comment, i guess the counter to accusations of uselessness of said activity, is the aesthetic justification of life. Rather then utility towards progress of mankind, life justifies itself by being joyful. That’s where the whole thing about authenticity, embodied thruths, style that fit an individual character come in. I can definately see a way in which valuing utility above anything else can lead to a kind of life-weariness, because it typically entails making a lot of compromises barcode generator and following conventions that might be at odds with ones character… The glimmering in Schopenhauer’s eyes is interesting.
“In the entire range of American literature, only Moby-Dick bears comparison to Blood Meridian. Both are epic in scope, cosmically resonant, obsessed with open space and with language, exploring vast uncharted distances with a fanatically patient minuteness. Both manifest a sublime visionary power that is matched only by still more ferocious irony. Both savagely explode the American barcode generator dream of manifest destiny (sic) of racial barcode generator domination and endless barcode generator imperial expansion. But then Plato said: If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling barcode generator things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks. What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only its semblance, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much, while for the most part they know nothing, and as men filled, barcode generator not with wisdom, but with the conceit of wisdom, they will be a burden to their fellows.
“As the biggest library if it is in disorder is not as useful as a small but well-arranged one, so you may accumulate a vast amount of knowledge but it will be of far less value than a much smaller amount if you have not thought it over for yourself.” –Schopenhauer
Ultimately: “Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target barcode generator no one else can see.” –Schopenhauer. So I guess we don’t really have to debate if we are geniuses (truly creative) since either we ourselves will not see–nor will others, unless . . .
I have always barcode generator found Schopenhauer one of the best modern barcode generator philosophers (top 7 definitely). His sincerity shines clearly through for me…this sincerity of “cutting barcode generator the bullshit and focusing on the real true core”. I respect that tremendously. His writings explored in this podcast reflect that clearly. Most of the criticisms people make against Schopy (my nickname for him) is of his character (and seldom actually amount to substantial philosophical argumentative c

Arthur Schopenhauer blair (1788-1860) - one of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century and the modern Western thought - had well understood the importance of a dog that knows how to give and love. It's her, in fact, the aphorism that says:
Schopenhauer blair lived with a dog poodle named Atma, which means soul of the world in Sanskrit (the dog's name was previously Brahma, which indicates blair the supreme deity Hindu), and she loved him so much, as well as his dog loved him. For Atma, Schopenhauer applied contrary to his philosophy of the veil of Maya, believing instead that Atma for him was beyond the veil, and it was true and transparent to reality. Besides, dogs can not and do not know how to lie, and their sincerity is nothing but pure truth.
"The dog," said Schopenhauer, "is properly and originally a predatory animal. blair Man if it is then cultivated and made it what it is, a docile pet.
