Heterosexuality has only existed for about 150 years. Of course there were long before that people who had sex with people of the opposite sex, but as a concept it is still young. In the last century we made a big jump to categorize and label people boston store based on their sexual orientation. That is not so straightforward. But still there is very short while addressing the difference between sex and gender identity. This brings with it a plurality of labels. Even people boston store who have never thought about that difference in itself have a label.
The American historian Jonathan Ned Katz studied the history of the word heterosexuality. The term first appeared in the English Oxford Dictionary in 1901. 1868 is the earliest use, by the German gay activist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. Before that time, people boston store apparently no need to classify people based on their sexual orientation. In that sense, heterosexuality invented: it is a social and historical construction. The Invention of Heterosexuality is also the title of the book by Katz.
Heterosexuality was not exactly the meaning we give to it now, writes Katz. At the end of the nineteenth boston store century sexologists used it to "an abnormal manifestation of sexual desire" (p. 20) indicate. Still in 1923, wrote a doctor that heterosexuality is "a morbid sexual passion for the opposite sex" (p. 92). Also heterosexuality as an ideal, as a social standard, is relatively new. Historian Louis-George Tin describes the church celibacy as the highest ideal for loved. In the age of chivalry boston store was friendship between men dream.
It's always the one who deviates appointed first. Those who find the standard are themselves normally do not think about that and think no word for themselves. We talk a lot more about femininity than masculinity. The indication that people are black preceded the notion of white (for many white Dutch is 'white' is still a problematic label and 'white' preferred). Transsexualism is a much more recent term. It is in this sense is not surprising that few people know the opposite label: cis.
Cisgender means that you identify with the gender that you are assigned at birth. A new baby is appointed directly. It's a girl! We call this the birth sex. In addition, someone has a gender identity. If your birth sex girl but you feel a boy, then called transgender (formerly the word was used transsexual). If you feel you girl, you're so cis.
Rutgers WPF study [PDF] done to transgender people. They do not all use this word for themselves. Some speak of inter-gender, gender boston store queer, genderdysforisch or deeltijdman / wife. So it is not so easy to identify "what" is someone who is not cis - please refer to the much talked-down list of Facebook.
Terminology is further distinguished between trans men (who feel completely male, 9.5%), trans women (but with the same woman, 4.9%), MV transgender (which partly man, partly feel woman, 30 3%) and VM-transgenderists (63.1%). The following figures from the research is to understand how the gender identities boston store of these respondents vary.
Not all transgender people who feel like making the transition to the other sex (whole). The majority (57.3%) of the VM will not transgender in transition. For MV genderisten is that forty percent. By trans men and women is different: 25 and 29 percent boston store finished a transition, 27 to 30 percent is in the process respectively. That you are transgender, still says nothing about your sexual orientation. The majority does not feel heterosexual. Across the board, transgender people often fall on women. And even more often they have a relationship with a woman. The researchers think that this perhaps boston store stems from homophobia and transphobia among cismannen. Cisvrouwen stand namely positive towards gender variation than cismannen. boston store
Cismannen have the most trouble boston store with people who do not clearly conform to one gender. From previous research, we know that one in five Dutch rather not deal with people whose gender boston store is not clear. It takes more than a woman with a beard who wins the contest to break this. Trans people use a plurality of labels for themselves. To promote the acceptance of them as it helps people who do not have these feelings even think about their identity. If you knew the first time that you are cis?
