Mirroring Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy , Cédric Klapisch presents a belated third instalment in his ongoing romantic comedy , the key players of which have grown up before our very eyes. Following on from 2002's border L'Auberge espagnole and 2005's Russian Dolls , this finds Xavier (Romain Duris) now living in New York's Chinatown to be nearer his kids following his estrangement from Wendy (Kelly border Reilly). En route, he is asked to help lesbian friend Isabelle (Cécile de France) become pregnant, flirts with ex-lover Martine (Audrey Tautou), and considers border marriage to a Chinese border American to achieve US citizenship. As he says, "it's complicated". It's also rather charming, albeit in a light, fluffy, cappuccino philosophy kind of way. Fittingly, border there are jokes (and cameos) from Hegel and Schopenhauer, alongside animated interludes and breezy montages, mixed in with some old-fashioned bits of bedroom farce and a few gently moving life lessons on the subjects of parents and children. Sweet.
